This week’s Jadaliyya “Media on Media” Roundup examines several important topics affecting the MENA region’s mediascape. The Pentagon released an aerial photo of a building demolished by a U.S. airstrike in Syria alleged to be an al-Qaeda center. However, local activists insist it was a mosque and the airstrike killed innocent civilians. Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi denounced the U.N’s decision to remove a report calling Israel an apartheid state from its website. A German newspaper was forced to remove Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s name from a list of “crazy leaders”, following accusations of ...

The Policing of the Palestinian Minority in Israel: An International Law Perspective

[Police officers in Israel. Photo taken by Mark Probst and uploaded via Wikimedia Commons]

In January 2017, the Palestinian Member of Knesset (MK), Haneen Zoabi, commissioned a report detailing multilayered omissions by the Israeli police force in combating the increasing crime rates within the Palestinian minority in Israel.[i] While the Israeli police force has prided itself in the last couple of years with halting the overall rate of violent crimes in the country, the report suggests that the police has failed miserably in halting violent crimes within Arab localities. Currently Palestinians make up twenty-one percent of the general population of the State of Israel, however, crime rates in Arab towns are three times higher than those in Jewish ...

Media on Media Roundup (February 28)

This week’s Jadaliyya “Media on Media” roundup looks at several important issues facing the MENA mediascape. Al-Jazeera examines how citizen journalists in Syria are countering regime narratives through the use of drone technology. The polarized nature of the Syrian war has left Arab Twitter users torn over the White Helmets’ recent Oscar win, with some showing support for the group whilst others condemned them as “self-serving terrorists.”   The Twitter-verse was also abuzz regarding a recent Nike advertisement that showcases Arab women in sport, with some users accusing it of flattening the heterogeneity of women’s lives in the region.

Jadaliyya Co-Editor Noura Erakat Discusses Israeli Land Grab Law with BBC World

On 6 February 2017, the Israeli Knesset passed the Validation Bill which retroactively sanctions the status of nearly 4,000 illegal structures built on private Palestinian land. While all settlements contravene international humanitarian law’s prohibition on the transfer of civilians into occupied territory, these cases are distinct because the structures are not built on what Israel has declared “State Lands.” Instead, they are built on private Palestinian lands where the proof of ownership is not in controversy. The Validation Law is an unprecedented new step in Israel’s incremental and steady encroachment of Palestinian lands. Jadaliyya Co-Editor, Noura Erakat, joins ...

The Modern Language Association and the 2017 Vote on the Academic Boycott of Israel

[Still image from

Ten years ago no academic association in the United States, with the possible exception of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), would have been motivated to make public statements critical of Israel. Over the last decade, many members of associations across the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences have taken a stand in support of Palestinians. One way in which this stand has taken form is through resolutions in support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The heated debate and the vote on academic boycott at the 2017 convention of the Modern Language Association (MLA) is only the most recent indication that solidarity with ...
